Beginning in August, the English company, with Alice as leading lady and Allen as conductor, toured the small towns of inland Victoria. After a brief return to Melbourne it went on to leafy, conservative Adelaide, the capital of South Australia, and from there to the small island colony of Tasmania. After nearly eight months on the road, the company ended its travels by making another sweep round the country areas of Victoria during January and February 1872. The visit to the prosperous goldfields town of Ballarat, on August 7–23, 1871, was typical of the tour.

She clearly enjoyed being onstage and had the priceless gift of being able to communicate that enjoyment across the footlights. As a later commentator for the Australasian Sketcher put it, “She is the very type of vivacity, liveliness and jauntiness…. ” The generally lower range of opérabouffe suited her big, strong voice best, but youthful imprudence enabled her to get away with higher-pitched roles, such as Marie or Satanella. In the latter, she caught the impetuosity and passion of the character so well that her imperfections in the more florid musical numbers were readily forgiven.

As a spectacular finale, Alberto Zelman, the conductor of the Italian troupe, devised a “Grand International Fantasia” featuring “Rule ALICE MAY 33 Alice in costume for the title role in an 1874 production of Offenbach’s La Grande-Duchesse de Gérolstein.
